A delegation from the Indian Naval Academy has visited Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) as part of an initiative to exchange information and promote closer links between the two establishments.

The group of three Officer Cadets, accompanied by one of their instructors, spent seven days at the College where they were given an insight into the training provided by BRNC and were able to meet some of their Royal Navy counterparts. During their visit they took part in a navigational exercise on Dartmoor and were also briefed on the maritime element of training on the River Dart.

Other highlights included a look at BRNC’s state-of-the-art ship’s bridge simulator, which is used to teach navigation and ‘bridgemanship’ – the working practices for running a bridge and developing the eye of a seaman. The view outside the simulator windows can represent open sea or harbours and coastlines from around the world.  It can be configured for any class of Royal Navy ship or submarine.  At the click of a button changes can be made to simulate different environmental conditions, such as sea states and winds, and bring into play other vessels, objects or scenarios.

Captain Henry Duffy, the Commanding Officer of BRNC, said:  “We have links with a number of international naval academies and are always pleased to have Cadets from other nations visit here.  Developing an understanding of each others’ training methods and sharing information is enormously beneficial as we pursue our common goal in providing the best possible training for our future leaders.”

During their visit to the UK, the Indian Naval Cadets also spent a day on board the Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender, as the ship was undergoing operational sea training off the coast of Devon and Cornwall.

The current Indian Naval Academy is located at Ezhimala in Kannur district of Kerala and a reciprocal visit by a team from BRNC is planned later this spring
