A group of eight young officers, partway through their Initial Warfare Officers Foundation course at BRNC had the opportunity to spend a week at sea onboard the German Navy' Sail Training Ship, FGS Gorch Foch.

The 90-metre long baroque ship, her crew and the 100 German Navy cadets spent five days in Dartmouth before embarking the RN cadets. The visit was part of the longstanding twinning agreement between BRNC and the German Naval academy, Marineschule Murwik.

Lieutenant Commander Jon Fletcher, Head of Navigation training at BRNC, said: "It is a fantastic opportunity for our Junior Warfare Officers to gain valuable watch keeping experience, and appreciate the power of the elements. Life under sail allows them to learn that you cannot control the sea. You need to work with the elements if you are to be an effective seaman officer. This sets the foundations that allow us to fight and win."
