Historical Reminder for French Navy Sailing Ship

The French schooner L’Étoile, one of two owned by the French Navy, brought the Commanding Officer of Ecole Navale, Brest, Rear Admiral Benoît Lugan to Dartmouth for Remembrance Weekend.

The L’Étoile, as part of the 23rd MTB flotilla of the Forces Navale FranÒ«aise Libre (Free French Naval Forces) was stationed in Kingswear during the war, running supplies to the resistance and bringing military personnel back to England.

On Remembrance Sunday, Rear Admiral Lugan attended a memorial service in Kingswear including the unveiling of a new plaque at the quayside. He also awarded the “Legion d’Honneur” to a group of British D-day veterans aboard L’Étoile berthed in Sandquay.
