BA Sword Winner 2016

The annual presentation of the Britannia Association Sword took place during the December Passing-out Parade. Awarded for enthusiasm and commitment and the greatest improvement during training, the recipient in 2016 was Sub Lieutenant Abdulrahman Buniyamin of the Nigerian Navy. The presentation of the ceremonial sword was made by General Sir Gordon Messenger Rpyal Marines, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff.

Sub Lt Buniyamin trained at BRNC during 2015. He arrived lacking confidence and through hard work and dedication overcame his initial difficulties to meet the standards required of him, putting in extra hours of study and foregoing his free time for private tutoring. He became known as being the first volunteer for any extra task.

Sub Lt Buniyamin is presently serving on the Nigerian Navy ship Burutu, said: "I am very happy to receive this prize. I put my best effort for every activity, be it assessed or not assessed. My knowledge has improved by being at BRNC, which has made me a better Naval officer back at home.

Witnessing the presentation were David and Christine Bowers who had donated the sword of Christine's late father, Lieutenant Commander Ray Whitfield to the BA for onward presentation. They thoroughly enjoyed the day and felt it was a wnderful privilege to see the parade and to meet the sword winner. Also among the VIP guests at the parade was Brigadier General Gbolahan Oyefesobi, the Defence Advisor at the Nigerian High Commission
