Demonstrations of the training carried out today and links with the local maritime community in Dartmouth are among the highlights at this year’s Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) Open Day on Saturday 27th July.

The world-renowned College will open its gates to visitors from 11 am to 4 pm offering members of the public a free glimpse beyond the gates.

Fitness demonstrations, weapon handling skills, tours of the College and an opportunity to take a look at the facilities such as BRNC’s state-of-the-art bridge simulator will show how the College transforms around 400 civilians into Naval Officers each year.

Members of the public will be able to climb on board the Hindostan, a decommissioned minesweeper used for training purposes, moored at Sandquay, and take river tours on small boats crewed by the Cadets.  Visitors will also be able to meet the current intake of international Cadets from nations who regularly send their Young Officers to train alongside their UK counterparts.

Captain Jol Woodard, the Commanding Officer of BRNC, said: “BRNC is very much the cradle of Royal Navy training providing a steady stream of leaders for both our country’s Navy and for friendly international partners and allies.  The Open Day is designed to show visitors what happens behind the gates and also let them see other parts of the Armed Forces and civilian Emergency Services that will be with us for the day.  It promises to be a great day out for the all the family, with music aplenty – Her Majesty’s Band of the Royal Marines, BRNC Voluntary Band, the Chivenor Military Ladies Choir and the Exmouth Shanty Men – military helicopters, local stallholders, entertainment for children, including alpacas from Thorn Farm and Birds of Prey from MF Falconry, along with many more attractions.  We are looking forward to welcoming people from the local community and further afield.”

Raising funds for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (#RNRMC) throughout the day, BRNC will also be supporting the promotion of the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta’s 175th Anniversary this year as well as Dartmouth’s Mayflower 400 Celebrations being held next year.

Free coaches are available to bring visitors to BRNC from the Park and Ride car park at the top of the town.   Food and refreshments will be available throughout the day.  Some attractions are not suitable for guests with limited mobility.
