Officer Cadets from Britannia Royal Naval College have taken part in a run to raise money for Stonewall, a charity that supports the LGBT community.

A group of 36 Cadets signed up for the charity run, which consisted of two laps of the main roadway within the College grounds and then laps around the ramps surrounding the parade ground.  The total distance covered by each runner was seven kilometres, which meant collectively the cadets ran 252 kilometres, or 1.3 laps of the M25 motorway around London.

The charity event was organised by twenty-one-year-old John Hawke, the charity representative of Blake Division.

He said: “I organised this run not only to raise money for Stonewall, but also to demonstrate how committed the Royal Navy is to the principles of Diversity and Inclusion. I was very happy to see so many OCs take time out of their busy schedules to raise money and show their support, and I am pleased to say that we have raised over 1,000. I am also very grateful for the Britannia Association, which provided refreshments and ‘goody bags’ for the runners.”

Last month the Royal Navy marked the 20th anniversary of the lifting of the ban on LGBT men and women serving in the Armed Forces, by flying the rainbow flags from the main masts of Naval Bases and Royal Marines units including BRNC.

Captain Roger Readwin, the Commanding Officer of BRNC, set the runners on their way.  He said: “In today’s Naval Service, people are at the heart of capability and are the most important factor in delivering operational effectiveness.  We value the individual skills and abilities that come with a diverse workforce and give our people the same opportunities regardless of sex, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender.  I was delighted to be asked to start this charity event and congratulate all those who took part.”
