BRNC at the RN Ski Championships

The Britannia Royal Naval College Ski Team enjoyed a successful RN/RM Alpine Championships in January which was held in the ski resort of Tignes Val Claret. The team consisted of young officers and members of staff cadets. The event, as always gave both complete novices and more advanced skiers the opportunity develop their skills, and ultimately compete in the annual championships representing the College.

This adventurous sport,’ explained proficient skier and lead officer Lieutenant Commander Trish Kohn ‘presents cadets with moment-by-moment challenges that strengthen their endurance, determination and leadership. Taking part in the formidable Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super-G races as well as the heart-stopping Downhill race takes grit and courage.’

Indeed the whole team efforts, which included a number of individual successes, secured the Rolls Royce Trophy major unit prize for BRNC,

Following the championships, one talented skier, Sub Lieutenant Helen Taylor RN was selected to go forward with the RN Ski Team to compete for the Service at the Combined Services Skiing Championships in Meribel, France and 2 others were short listed for next year’s team.

For College lecturer Jez Spring, this year’s championship was the last for him to organise. He has been one of the main event co-ordinators for six years and was delighted to receive the Jack Ellis Trophy this year awarded for the best contribution to RN Winter Sports in 2009. Jez is also a former air engineering officer and still serves as a Lieutenant Commander in the Air Branch of the Royal Naval Reserve.
