Volunteer Band Success

AMAZING SUCCESS

The Britannia Royal Naval College Volunteer Band which formed in September last year, met with considerable success at their first attendance of the annual RN Volunteer Band Festival in Portsmouth on Saturday July 3rd 2010

There were nine bands competing in the Guildhall, Portsmouth and the elements included both a 15 minute timed marching display and a 15 minute concert with prescribed programme. “I have to confess to be a little nervous about the marching element of the competition,” said Phil Watson, Volunteer Band Instructor and former Major RM Band Service and Director of Music. “We have done some parade work during our ten months together but our music repertoire has been our first priority.“

Despite the relatively short time the band has been together they achieved 3 of the 7 awards available at the competition. The Kenneth Alford Trophy for Best Drum Major was awarded to Phil Haywood and the whole band received the Lea-Wilkinson Dirk for the Best Concert Performance and the Rose Morris Trophy for Runner-up to Best All Round Volunteer Band in the Royal Navy.

Prizes were awarded by the Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Sir Alan Massey KCB CBE ADC, and the band were delighted that the Commodore of BRNC, Commodore Jake Moores was able to be present to witness the success of his band. Commodore Moores stated “We are absolutely delighted that the Volunteer Band has done so outstandingly well against such stiff competition at its first appearance in this national competition. Everyone connected to the College is extremely proud of what they have achieved”

The Volunteer Band meets weekly in the Casper John Hall at BRNC. All participants are expected to have attained at least a Grade 5 level of playing and with as with all volunteer bands there are people from all walks of life and ages involved. There are a few seventy-year-olds amongst the member      and the youngest is just 17. Within the BRNC band 2 members are College staff and there are presently 2 cadets under training.

Note: Summer Concert on Tuesday 20th July in BRNC. Some of the music played at competition will be within the programme. Tickets are £8 available from the Concert Secretary, BRNC and cheques should be made payable to the Central Amenities Fund.
