The present Senior Upper Yardmen (SUY) course at Britannia Royal Naval College paid a visit to the Dartington based charity ‘Breakthrough Plus’ during November to provide some extra manpower to their ground clearance project.

Breakthrough Plus is part of the Breakthrough Tranformational Trust that deals in conflict transformation within the mental and physical aspects of children. At their School Farm site in Dartington they provide a range of activities and experiences, appropriate for each participant and group, working with children aged between 10 and 16 years of age.

As part of training in BRNC all cadets are encouraged to get involved with projects in the wider, local community. The SUY’s have all served a number of years in the RN before being selected for a commission and are well versed in the benefits and opportunities of outreach projects.

"We all embraced the opportunity whole-heartedly, "explained Sub Lieutenant Jonathan Cresswell who organised the visit. "When we read about the work of Breakthrough Plus we were impressed with how hard they are working in quite difficult circumstances. After our time with them we felt both humbled and inspired by their work and delighted that we were able to help out a little."
