150th Anniversary All Stars Band Concert

To mark the start of the 150th Anniversary of Royal Navy training on the River Dart Britannia Royal Naval College welcomed back former members of the Royal Marine Band BRNC for a reunion and concert last weekend.

The concert, and reunion had been organised by Mr Les Sheppard, a former long serving Band Colour Sergeant  at BRNC, assisted by the Britannia Association office staff, Liza and Nichola.  Their efforts ensured a most fitting start the Anniversary celebrations at BRNC.

This one off concert  saw forty-nine musicians assemble on the stage of Caspar John Hall to perform a wide variety of music to a full house including a number of BA members and their guests. The retired and serving RM Band members travelled from all over the country to participate in both a reunion on Friday evening and then after just four-and-a-half hours rehearsal on Saturday afternoon, a wonderful concert.

The years melted away as the evening progressed  under the batons of Major Jon Ridley RM, who was the last Director of Music at BRNC and Major Phil Watson RM Retired who presently leads the hugely successful BRNC Volunteer Band.

The audience were treated to a demonstration of an exceptionally high standard of performance as the band played music from stage and screen, from the Stravinsky to Bellini, from swing to marches.  The skill of these musicians was epitomised by the solo professionalism of WO2 Bandmaster Dave Prentice RM on Xylophone, Mr Andy Manley on Flute, Messrs Dave Lambert and Phil Makin on clarinet and trumpet and Mr Andy Seddon on Classical Guitar.
